Waldemar Cierpinski is a former East German athlete and two-time Olympic champion in the marathon. Waldemar Cierpinski was a popular runner in his time, and is now considered one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. Cierpinski won two Olympic gold medals in the marathon, in Montreal in 1976 and Moscow in 1980. He is one of only three runners to win two Olympic marathon gold medals, along with Abebe Bikila and Eliud Kipchoge. Cierpinski was primarily a steeplechase and 10,000 meter runner before entering his first marathon in 1974. He was relatively unknown when he ran in the 1976 Olympics, but he took the lead from defending champion Frank Shorter and won by two minutes. Cierpinski is tied with Abebe Bikila and Eliud Kipchoge for the most Olympic marathon victories. He is considered one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. Cierpinski is a member of the German Olympic Committee. Since 2007, Cierpinski has been an honorary member of the SG WiP Goettingen 06. He lives in Halle an der Saale.
