Sergey Bubka is a former Soviet and Ukrainian pole vaulter who is famous for breaking the world record for men's pole vault 35 times, including 17 outdoor and 18 indoor records. He was the first to clear 6 meters in 1985 and 6.10 meters in 1991. His career-best and outdoor world record of 6.14 meters stood for 20 years until 2014.Bubka won six consecutive World Championships, the only athlete to do so in any event. He also won gold at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Being a Ukrainian hero, Bubka was a prominent athlete after the Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine gained independence. He was adored by Ukrainians in the 1990s. Bubka was a member of the Ukrainian parliament from 2002 to 2006 and has been the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine since 2005. In 2012, Bubka was inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame. He is currently the president of the International Masters Games Association.
